Embracing the Obon Festival: A Guide to Japan's Summer Spirit

Aug 24
2 min read

As summer reaches its peak in Japan, a profound and spiritual atmosphere settles over the land. Aug, the season of Obon (お盆), a significant Buddhist event dedicated to honoring the spirits of one's ancestors.

While Obon is a time of deep cultural meaning and reflection, it is also a vibrant period of community celebration, dancing, and light.

To honor this special time, we wanted to share a glimpse into how we are commemorating Obon this year, and offer some inspiration for your own creative reflections.

What is Obon?

Obon is a three-day festival, typically held in mid-August, that marks the time when the ancestral spirits are believed to return to this world to visit their families. The festival is a beautiful blend of Buddhist rituals and traditional Japanese culture.

Key elements of the Obon season include:

  • Welcome and Farewell Fires (Mukaebi and Okuribi): Families light fires at the beginning and end of Obon to guide the spirits to and from the household.

  • Visiting Ancestral Graves (Haka Mairi): People visit and clean the family graves, offering prayers and fresh flowers.

  • Bon Odori (盆踊り): This is the most lively part of the festival! Communities gather in parks or temples to perform traditional dances in a circle around a raised platform. These dances are meant to welcome and entertain the visiting spirits, and everyone is invited to join in the festive spirit.

Reflecting on Tradition in Your Journal

This year, we wanted to help our creative community connect with the spirit of Obon. That’s why all subscribers who received our August Collage Kit were treated to an exclusive Obon Sticker Sheet as a special gift.

To show you how this kit can come to life, we created this special journal spread. We used the sticker sheet to craft a layered scene that captures the magic of an Obon night.

In this spread, you'll find:

  1. The Bon Odori Scene: Our main sticker illustration serves as the focal point, depicting the lively Bon Odori dance under a canopy of glowing paper lanterns.

  2. Layered Textures: To add depth, we layered the sticker art with textured materials like torn kraft paper and corrugated cardboard, tied together with delicate twine to create a "paper lantern" effect.

  3. Traditional Motifs: We incorporated other elements from the sticker sheet, such as the kiku (chrysanthemum) and delicate red berries, which are traditional Obon offerings.

  4. Heartfelt Messages: The handwritten Japanese text translates to reflections of gratitude and connection to one's lineage, reminding us of the festival's core purpose: to honor those who came before us.

Join the Obon Celebration

However you choose to celebrate this season—whether by learning about its traditions, participating in a Bon Odori, or reflecting through your creativity—we hope you find meaning and connection in the Obon spirit.

Wishing you a peaceful and reflective Obon.
